Halloween in Japan: A BusanKevin Contest

My favourite time of year is quickly approaching. Halloween is almost here. Every year on October 31st, I’m a very happy guy.

As a Canadian, I grew up celebrating Halloween each year by putting on a costume and going out throughout my town trick or treating.

The weeks leading up to Halloween would see all the major TV networks showing Halloween shows and movies. The excitement would grow as our teachers would decorate our classrooms and we would have Halloween parties at school.

I have already decorated my apartment here in Japan and have been reading lots of Halloween stories to my children.

To celebrate this festive time of year I’m holding a BusanKevin in Japan Halloween contest.  Japan is well-known for its bizarre and col KitKat flavours by Nestle. Well, this year is no different. I have picked up a big package of Pumpkin Pudding KitKat bars just for Halloween.

  1. I like Halloween because I can scare people as much as I want. I usually scare my friends but on Halloween It’s easier to find costumes and other masks, so they freak out more than usual.

  2. It is the official Gay holiday in America. It’s ours. I also have a few memories as a kid that are good ones. My Grandmother, unbeknownst to me, made my costume one year. She took large white cardboards and drew the front and back of the King of Hearts, making a sandwich board for me to wear. She even had a wig and a crown. I wore white tights and some kind of shirt underneath it, with black formal shoe that she attached an elastic with a buckle on it. In my small town there is a lot of money and we were driven to the wealthier areas to get candy. Mostly full candy bars, it was the early 70’s. One of my best memories. Though I wasn’t happy with the outfit to begin with. But after the success of the evening, I loved it. TubaBuddha here.

  4. I don’t think I’m gonna win. If I do, please PM me through my YouTube (suiton629).

Anyway, my response is 2 fold.
As a kid, I enjoyed going trick-or-treating with my friends around town. There were always these more rich areas of my town so we’d usually go there and bring like a pillow case since the people in that area were notorious for just giving out whole bags of candy each time and sometimes some money. But that area was like a 10 min walk from my neighborhood area. After that, we’d always walk back more close to home and get a bit more. It was very good times, and yet somehow I had always forgotten the candy coma (stomach aches) we’d get after gobbling all the candy.

Now, I get to enjoy giving kids candy while I’m home and at work, we also get some parents who like to show up with their kids. It’s pretty cool seeing the costumes these days since as a kid, it was always a princess, price, knight, ninja, ninja turtles, etc. But now we get like Transformers, Mine Craft stuff, etc. I guess Halloween has turned into a commercialized candy fest/cosplay day for America. Good stuff.

Anyway, it would take a miracle for me to win since I actually do win anything. Thanks for even offering this contest!

  6. Why do I like Halloween? Hmm… dunno really.. in the 90’s, when I was a kid, maybe cause it was the cool new thing that came from the west… now it is probably cause it is one of the few non-national, non-religious, not-uptight holidays we have, or in other words: Because it’s fun! =D

    • I like Halloween because it falls on my favorite times of year, Autumn. (get it? Falls…haha) I love sitting in the cold dressed in an oversize sweater while drinking warm cider to wait for the tricker-treaters. Watching all the kids dress up in cute costumes shyly asking me for candy is so adorable! I also love Halloween parties. Usually, my friends and I enjoy our night by watching scary movies! ^^ It’s fun to dress up and eat tons of candy because you don’t really get to do it anytime else throughout the year, which makes Halloween so special. 🙂

I live in a town that takes Halloween very seriously and has a week long celebration of events, costume parties and parades during the last week of October, so it is easily my favorite holiday.

  16. I like Halloween for many reasons. One being the delicious candy, the scary movies that come on tv, the Halloween specials on tv shows that I love, such as Pretty Little Liars, and of course the dressing up part.

  17. I live in Romania and here we don’t celebrate Halloween… but once I had a little Halloween party with my friends–we painted our faces, made some costumes from leafs and stuff, caved pumpkins and went trick or treating! It was really fun (even though no one really understood what we were doing lol). Anyway, I find it really exciting to decorate your house “Halloween-like” and I hope that one day I’ll celebrate this holiday “for real”, like they do in other countries! 🙂

  18. I love Halloween because I can look crazy and no one would bat an eyelash. Last year I gave out candies to the kids in the neighborhood with my mud mask on without realizing it. It was hilarious when I went to the bathroom and saw my face. The kids probably thought it was my Halloween face.

  19. I would say the reason I love halloween is the memories of all the movies even from disney. Then the going out trick or treating and getting back home for the trades. Haunted houses and being spooked of everything for the month. Last the dressing up once a year we get to cosplay.

  21. I love Halloween too! In fact, I live in The Netherlands, Europe, where they don’t really celebrate Halloween. But like Japan, the Dutch love a good party so they take some of the themes and often decorate the supermarkets with witches and the like. Also some of the theme parks have a big Halloween bash. But why I love Halloween is because I grew up with it! We always went out trick or treating as long as I thought I could get away with it, lol. I think I even went trick or treating at 16, haha. But the atmosphere is just great, autumn often has great weather and this mystical element to it and Halloween just adds to it. 🙂 So the free candy, magic, mystical, decorations, and watching scary movies, all great fun!

  22. Halloween will always be one of my favorite holidays! Ever since I was a kid, I loved dressing up as various awesome characters. I could be anyone or anything I could dream of… even if just for one night. It was pretty cool to be (seemingly) awarded with a bountiful amount of treats in the process! I may not go trick-or-treating anymore, but I still make sure to have a little pile of candy to indulge in during the season. =] The “frightening” sights, movies, and events make it all the more awesome. It’s the first holiday that I look forward to each year. ^-^

  23. My first job was in retail and it started right around this time last year, a little bit before Halloween. I had a lot of fun working in a high volume store and meeting all the other employees (it was a brand new store so everyone was new). We had a lot of fun dealing with the madness of being approached by multiple customers at once and the huge mess customers would make and we’d be scrambling at night trying to clean everything up after the store closed. Me and one of my other co-workers always talk about this. Even though it was insane we had a really good time. I ended up having Halloween off that year and i will have it off this year again but to me that experience made Halloween something special, because I got to meet new wonderful people and we had a good time.

  25. I Like Halloween because—-
It is the holiday with the BEST weather and a promise of at least another month of decent weather without dangers from heat or cold.

And it is a holiday that seems to upset those people who love to be upset — thereby amusing the rest of us and giving the frustrated ones a purpose for a short time– “–))

  30. I love Halloween because when I grew up nobody had heard about Halloween. I live in Norway and there are no holidays or anything fun happening in October and November. It’s also the time of year when it gets colder and darker, and you know you have 5 months with hardly any sun, nor any fun. But I always have one thing to look forward to and that is my birthday on the 2nd of November. When I was around 12 Halloween slowly entered our country. I embraced it! I started having Halloween birthdays because it was so close to Halloween. I explained to my friends what Halloween is, I bought pumpkins and decorated my room with scary skeletons, ghost and plastic insects. All the guests and I had to dress up and we even went on trick or treat around my neighborhood. In the “early days” people looked puzzled at us, but today only pensioners will frown at you.
Halloween is great because it makes the tough months between the summer holiday and Christmas so much easier.

  31. I just love halloween. Just like as a kid you can dress up and experience those dark nights hunting for candy and scares. People get extremely creative with their costumes alot of the time, just like conventions. Living in the east coast of the US, its hard to find a shop that will sell Rare/Custom/Different KitKats from Japan.

  33. I always loved Halloween. Mostly because about 7-10 of my family members would go trick or treating and we would have so much fun going from house to house and those 2 hours would pass by quickly. So for me it’s all about family, but a little candy don’t hurt either. 🙂

  34. I loved Halloween for the obvious reason.. free candy. I mean what kid doesn’t like Halloween for the candy. I’m too old to go out now though.. so I enjoy seeing my nephew dress up and go have fun. Although with him being only 4 years old.. I think I’m more excited about Halloween coming up than he is.

  35. I love Halloween, because it’s great and you get to dress up once a year into something you want. They always have parties for all ages and for teens and adults, even if you don’t like Halloween, it’s still a nice little treat to see pumpkins all lit with faces and others things.
