Halloween in Japan: A BusanKevin Contest

My favourite time of year is quickly approaching. Halloween is almost here. Every year on October 31st, I’m a very happy guy.

As a Canadian, I grew up celebrating Halloween each year by putting on a costume and going out throughout my town trick or treating.

The weeks leading up to Halloween would see all the major TV networks showing Halloween shows and movies. The excitement would grow as our teachers would decorate our classrooms and we would have Halloween parties at school.

I have already decorated my apartment here in Japan and have been reading lots of Halloween stories to my children.

To celebrate this festive time of year I’m holding a BusanKevin in Japan Halloween contest.  Japan is well-known for its bizarre and col KitKat flavours by Nestle. Well, this year is no different. I have picked up a big package of Pumpkin Pudding KitKat bars just for Halloween.

  1. the reason why I love Halloween is because of the new and exciting costumes people put on. and all of the haunted houses/ mazes that you get to visit. Plus i find it very interesting how other cultures celebrate Halloween differently than we do here in the states.

    ~good luck everybody:)

  2. Halloween is awesome, not only does it occur in fall (my favorite season) but it brings about memories of my childhood. My friends and I running from house to house yelling, “TRICK OR TREAT!” Dressing up in fun costumes and running around the neighborhood, acting goofy and laughing all night. It also was a time to share favorite ghost stories, and see who could craft the best idea, and share it at night. Halloween is a time to be free and have fun, it fits my personality so well (even as an adult). Those are some reasons as to why I fully embrace this holiday!

  3. I like Halloween because of the original purpose of this Holiday. To dress up scarily in order to scare off the harmful spirits from the otherworld from seeking a place in our world. I also like it because even though I might be old now, instead of going for candy – my school does this thing where instead of treats, we go around asking for non perishable items to donate to our local food drive. It’s a great organization and a great way to spend the evening 🙂

  4. I like Halloween because it let me recollect nice memories of my childhood and it’s the time to watch epic movies those Abbot and Costello movies with the monsters… so funny, watch the Adam Family and Nightmare before Christmas… heck it’s a good time to watch any of Tim Burton’s movie 🙂

  5. I used to hate Halloween, because as a kid in Japan I felt pretty dumb wearing costumes, while my parents had a party for their friends. It was nice getting candy from them, but a lot of the candy was gross. The one time I really liked Halloween is when I saw a commercial for a ninja turtle mask, on a TMNT VHS, and I thought it would be Awesome to be one for Halloween. My dad ending up buying one and my mom sewed me the rest of the costume. Of course I showed photos of it to my friends who weren’t that interested. But to me that was one of the best holidays I ever had. After that I got older and dressing in costume didn’t seem very mature anymore. I was one of those kids who did anything he could to act mature.

After, I moved to America, I was invited to parties for Halloween, but dressing in costume never really appealed to me, like it did when I was Raphael back in 1990.

  6. Halloween means a day of originality, a day to explore the depths of the mind through excitement. It’s the one day that I can express myself through means of creativity. An experience that I would like to share is that of watching Halloween movies with my parents. It was very nice to sit down at the T.V and watch these movies, considering that my parents were very busy when I was a kid. To this day I cherish those memories and have a chance to relive them every October 31st.

  7. Why? Because it’s my birthday and it’s a wonderful Holliday and going knocking door by door for candy when I was a kid, with a silly custume was fun! Now I’m 23 years old, almost 24, it’ll be awesome to have those candies, I always loved odd Japanese stuff, and it’ll be a perfect birthday gift 🙂

  8. My favorite thing about Halloween is just the cool down in weather, the creativity in the makeup, laughing at all the “sexy” costumes. Today I saw a sexy corn cob costume. Its one of the last holidays in the later months that isn’t swallowed up by Christmas, but it’s getting close. Thanksgiving is already taken. Everybody enjoys our only “dark” holiday.

  9. Halloween is a day for watching scary moves and enjoying all of the Trick or Treaters that come to the door in their costumes they have picked out for themselves! Some are new Trick or Treaters and some are pros at it still, awesome to see them all working for the treats! Candy bars, popcorn balls, apples, oranges and sometimes money!

  10. The reason why I like Halloween is because when you hand out candy you get to see children’s eyes light up when you give them their favorite candy bar/ candy. This moment really fills me with joy and gets me excited for next year Halloween to come! Plus extra candy afterwards never hurts! 😀

But some of my friends talked about it. And when there is candy, always it’s a fun time…

  14. Where I am from, we don’t really have any particular Halloween celebrations, except for parties by clubs and such. But the trend is slowly emerging I think. We dress up in costumes and go trick or treatin’ in a different time of year. But as I perceived Halloween through media such as movies etc., it looks like a very interesting and fun holiday. It’s also interesting how Japan picks up this “trendy” holidays such as Halloween and Christmas. Would LOVE to try those kitkats 🙂 Cheers to Japan!

  17. I’ve marveled the the flavors Kit Kats come in around the world. Here in the US we only get variations of chocolate, and if I’m going to get a chocolate Kit Kat I’ll stick with the original. But I’ve seen flavors such as Banana and Mint which sound good and from Japan ones I’ve seen that I’d like to try were Matcha Green Tea and Red Bean mostly for their very Japanese nature.

  18. I love Halloween because of the epic candy you get only around this time and plus I love tons of candy. I love it a lot and then I get to sit down and watch scary movies and enjoy the holiday. I’m not really into dressing up into costumes at all anymore but when I was younger I use to.

God, I hope I win this candy, it looks soo good and probably tastes good.

  19. I love Halloween simply because of the nostalgia associated with it. Living in eastern Canada I always remember having to wear warm clothes under my costumes because it would be chilly, and just hating that. Of course the candy made up for the unspookified costume.

  20. I like Halloween for six reasons: Candy (Mostly Kit-Kat,) Eggs, toilet paper, shaving cream, smashing pumpkins and crazy costumes! Of corse it was harmless fun 30 years ago, you would probably get thrown in jail now. Boooo

  21. I love Halloween, and part of it is my choco-holic cravings. But I miss being a kid because my mom made an outfit for me as a black widow. I can’t go out and hang with my friends anymore, so I sit at home and watch as many horror films as I can fit into the month (believe me, there are TONS of good ones)! It’s actually really fun because when my friends can come over after work, we watch movies together. My favorite is a movie (I think from the 80’s) is Wax Museum and Sweeny Todd, though I find the last to be more ironic and comical than horror.

  22. There shouldn’t be a reason why you love Halloween, you just do! I have love Halloween since I can remember. The fact that you get to dress up as anything you desire and get free candy, is amazing! Plus there’s also hunted houses, story telling, movies, creatative cooking and the list goes on… But my absolute favorite thing about halloween is, the contest between houses on who has the better decorations. Lights, candles and fog machine is just plane old fun. I also recommend everybody to learn about different culturals on Halloween, you might be very surprise on what you’ll learn 🙂

Good luck to everyone and Happy Early Halloween!!

  24. I love Halloween because it’s the one time of year that you get to be whoever you want. If you want to be a superhero or a firewoman or heck even a masked murderer, then you can! You get to take a step out of your life and into whatever role you want! Not to mention all the pumpkins! Nothing says holidays like the smell of pumpkin 🙂

  25. Wow, Those look VERY Yummy!
I love Halloween because of the sights and smells in the air. The wood burning, candy coated leafy smell just amazes me. The scent of pumpkin guts and pie made from which, the smell of plastic Halloween masks! The taste of ANYTHING Pumpkin flavored. The sights of witches, ghosts and goblins about the town, Halloween is the beginning of the end! The year is just closing, but only starting to and you can see it in everything around you, it gets darker early, people’s moods change and the trees get tired and their leafs fall. I like Halloween for many reasons, and those are just a few.

  27. the reason I love Halloween is because it always reminds me of when I was 4 years old. I would go trick or treating with friends and family one time my cousin dressed as a cow and ran off with a jack lantern filled with candy and all I remember is seeing his utters bounce and falling as he ran for his life LOL! Best laugh I had 😀

  28. I remember Halloween as a time of anticipation. What to wear, who to go with, how much candy will we get. Five o’clock in the evening couldn’t come soon enough! It was also a fun time spending it with my brother and sister. There would always be a competition on who would get the most treats!

We would sit at the window and watch other kids in their costumes going house to house including ours because my grandfather enjoyed passing out candy. I called it “kicking a kid when he’s down”. After countless attempts of my siblings and I begging our parents. One year, they finally gave in and allowed us to partake take in Halloween and all it’s glory! At that time we weren’t prepared with costumes so my siblings and I made what we could from things around the house. I took the easiest route and just put a blanket over myself and called it a ghost. Just thinking about it makes me laugh. It was so last minute but I enjoyed every minute of it. we had to have walked at least 5 blocks of houses that night. Halloween has ever since, been a holiday that always brought me joy. The anticipation I felt as a kid being able to go trick-or-treating still sticks with me today. That’s why I love Halloween.

  30. What I love most about Halloween is the seasonal treats and the cheap candy! When I was a kid, I used to think of this holiday as a way to get free candy. Now, as an adult, I can go to the store and buy it! But, I am all about the seasonal treats, like pumpkin pie! Yum! My mom makes it from scratch around this time, and everyone comes to eat some. haha

The holiday has lost a lot of it’s allure from when I was a kid, since I don’t dress up or go trick-or-treating, but this time of year is always special because of the time spent with family and the pumpkin pie.

  33. Halloween is one of my favorite holidays for a few reasons. It’s one of the traditional festivals of my country, Ireland (we call it Samhain), that got brought over to North America by Irish emigrants – and then spread all over the world. It marks the new year of the old European calendar, the end of harvest and the decent into winter.

On the night of the 31st friends, families, and people who you just haven’t seen in ages, meet up and play games, eat sweets, while dressed up in all sorts of creative costumes. It’s one of the few times a year that everyone can get together and celebrate, and why I love it’s cheerful, yet sometimes anciently eerie atmosphere so much!

    Nice one Kevin.
