Halloween in Japan: A BusanKevin Contest

My favourite time of year is quickly approaching. Halloween is almost here. Every year on October 31st, I’m a very happy guy.

As a Canadian, I grew up celebrating Halloween each year by putting on a costume and going out throughout my town trick or treating.

The weeks leading up to Halloween would see all the major TV networks showing Halloween shows and movies. The excitement would grow as our teachers would decorate our classrooms and we would have Halloween parties at school.

I have already decorated my apartment here in Japan and have been reading lots of Halloween stories to my children.

To celebrate this festive time of year I’m holding a BusanKevin in Japan Halloween contest.  Japan is well-known for its bizarre and col KitKat flavours by Nestle. Well, this year is no different. I have picked up a big package of Pumpkin Pudding KitKat bars just for Halloween.

  1. I like Halloween for the memories that I’ve had from my childhood. Getting free candy was a pretty cool idea for the kid me. Now I’m in it for the justified slutty costumes 😀

  3. I love Halloween, it’s my favorite time of the year. I love the candy and scary movies but when I was a kid, I was very shy and always quiet. Even when it came to close friends, I was shy. When it came to Halloween, I could dress up as whatever I wanted and pretend to be whoever I was or even whoever I wish I could be. It was definitely more than just a holiday for me, it was a nice escape from the real world and I miss it very much. I still watch all the scary movies and go to Halloween parties with friends, but I really miss the trick or treating lol.

  4. I love Halloween because it was a time where you could be anyone and no one cared. Where you could live out your childhood dreams and become the princess you wanted to be or become the superhero that inspires you. My high school still dresses up for Halloween and it’s huge. Everyone is having a blast seeing everyone’s ideas and even creating groups. It’s awesome.

I remember the times, when my siblings and I were done Trick-o-Treating, and we’d dump out all of our candy onto the floor. Then we’d see who got the best and trade. It was awesome and times that will never get old.

I will also never forget the times my mother would buy pretzels instead of candy and my siblings and I would complain. Now that I think about it, I think she was buying them so we wouldn’t steal the candy for the Trick-o-Treaters. Smart move Mom.

I also love Halloween because there was a girl who have moved with her mother and sister from Cambodia. I became friends with her and one year, I asked if she knew what Halloween was. She didn’t. So, I let her borrow one of my costumes from past years, decked out myself, and took her Trick-o-Treating. It was a blast, not because of the candy, but because I was able to share a part of my culture and share it with her. It was also amazing to see how happy she was and how much fun she had. That will be a Halloween I never forget.

  8. Halloween: such a history. I love it because I can wear one of the many interesting styles I like and for once nobody stares or makes strange comments. I also love the festiveness, the cute decorations, and of course, the speciality candy. They sometimes had speciality candy when I lived in Korea, and I really miss it!

Also, I love going to Halloween shows. Bands masquerade as a famous band and sing a set of their songs–so much fun.

  9. I love Halloween because it was the highlight of my childhood. At school we would have a parade and party every year. At home on the weekends leading up to Halloween, my cousins and I would watch scary movies on Disney Channel. On the actual day, we all went trick or treating in our costumes. Such fun times! Being older now, I like Halloween for the fun seasonal treats like Halloween Oreos, Halloween Pop tarts, and pumpkin flavored stuff everywhere!

  11. The reason i like Halloween is all the kiss in costumes that knock on my door and their face what somebody actually have candy for them. People around here dont really see the point in halloween and bc of that, nobody goes trick or treating. Also.. Japanese snacks are the best. Was down there in 09 and loved every place i went to!

  12. There are a lot of reasons to like Halloween. As a kid, I didn’t have any siblings so my friends and I would get together and we’d go trick or treating. It was nice because we knew everyone in town and it was always a surprise to see what candies or goodies we’d get. Even pencils and trinkets! Always great! Aside from the treats, the costumes were nice too! Everyone had their own costume and sometimes had a reoccurring theme or a new one. It was nice also seeing the older kids dress up and even see the decorations and mini plays the families would have in some homes. Seriously creative! It felt like a new world where magic really existed. Now that I have a little brother, it’s great having to listen to his stories about what he sees and what he gets as well as who he meets.
It’s always good to see that, in a time when people are really distrusting of one another, we can trust the people enough to give candies away and eat them. It brings communities and families together. Also, I just like spooky things. ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ

  13. I love Halloween for so many reasons. I live in Canada and have had the same experience as you growing up. I love carving pumpkins, that is one of my favorite things about halloween, I also love decorating the apartment, we decorated ours the first week in October. I could go on and on about all the reasons that I love Halloween, but the most prevalent reason is dressing up in costumes and letting my inner child free. 🙂
